The Champaign County Forest Preserve District started with Lake of the Woods County Park, a 260-acre preserve near Mahomet opened over Memorial Day Weekend in 1948. Since then the District has grown to 7 preserves reaching throughout the county and over 4,000 acres of greenspace.
